Fr. Alejandro Báez, S.J.
Alejandro was born in Jalisco, México, where he was inspired by the joyfulness of priests and nuns at his local parish. After high school, he immigrated to Southern California and became active at St. Peter’s Italian Church.
Fr. Báez to discern a vocation to their order, and he began studying at St. John’s College Seminary in Camarillo, California, while serving as music director and director of religious education at St. Peter’s. A vocalist and self-taught organist, saxophonist and pianist, music has always been an important part of Fr. Báez’s life. He entered the Jesuits in 2004 and, as a novice, worked at Dolores Mission School in East Los Angeles, with the Yup'ik people in Chefornak, Alaska, and with a L’Arche community in Spokane, Washington.
Missioned to Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, he studied theology for one year before earning a master’s degree in music education from New York
University and in conjunction with the Julliard School of Music and while student teaching at William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York, and the United Nations International School in New York City.
Fr. Báez then taught at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, and Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles, in both the music and theology departments. He was next missioned to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree while serving as a deacon at St. Raymond Catholic Church in Dublin, California.
He has sung professionally and with community choirs and has pursued musical training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and NYU|The Juilliard School. After ordination, Fr. Báez worked as Music and Artistic Director of the Choral, Orchestra and Liturgical Program at Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma, WA (2018-2020). He also served as visiting priest at Christ Our Hope Church in Downtown Seattle. His first Masses were celebrated at St. Raymond and St. Peter’s Italian Church. (USA West Province)
Fr. Alejandro Báez, S.J. currently served as the Parochial Vicar at St. Agnes Church in San Francisco, California. He brings to his ministry a deep passion for Liturgy, Ignatian Spirituality, pastoral music, and spiritual direction, integrating these areas to help others encounter God through prayer, beauty, and community.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as Parochial Vicar, and from 2023 to 2025, he was appointed Parish Administrator of St. Agnes Church, guiding the parish community with dedication and care until the UWE Province returned the parish to the pastoral oversight of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Fr. Báez is now engaged full-time in his doctoral studies in Pastoral Liturgy and Music at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where he is expected to complete his degree by October 2026. His academic work continues to be shaped by his pastoral experience and his desire to bridge faith, culture, and the liturgical life of the Church.
